Minister Yerlikaya's statement on 'CHP driver': 'We stand against all forms of attack'

Gökhan Gülyurt, the driver of the bus carrying the CHP delegation to the old Parliament building as part of the April 23 National Sovereignty and Children's Day events, was detained for allegedly failing to comply with a 'stop' order from police teams. Burhanettin Bulut, CHP Deputy Chairman responsible for Public Relations and Media Relations and Adana MP, announced that the bus driver had been referred to court with a request for arrest and was subsequently sentenced to house arrest.

STATEMENT ALSO CAME FROM MINISTER TUNÇ

Minister of Justice Yılmaz Tunç made an assessment regarding the allegations that have come to the agenda in a statement on his social media account. Minister Tunç stated that the bus driver was detained on the grounds that he drove the vehicle toward a police officer.

DRIVER'S TESTIMONY EMERGES

Gülyurt stated, 'I work as a driver for the Republican People's Party. On the day of the incident, I did not notice the stop order due to the intensity of the program. Later, I stopped the vehicle, spoke with the authorities, and we continued with an escort. I have not committed any intentional act against the state or the police force.'

The court did not find the request for arrest appropriate, considering the existing evidence, the suspect's testimony, and the manner in which the incident occurred. However, it decided to impose judicial control with a travel ban and a condition not to leave his residence for one month during the investigation.

It was stated that the decision could be appealed to the Ankara Duty Criminal Court of First Instance within two weeks.

STATEMENT FROM THE CHIEF PUBLIC PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE

In a press release from the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, it was stated, 'The suspect G.G., who did not comply with the stop order of the police officers on duty and drove the bus toward them on April 23, 2025, was referred to court with a request for his arrest within the scope of the investigation conducted by our Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office. As a result of his interrogation, the Ankara Duty Criminal Court of Peace imposed a travel ban and a house arrest measure on the suspect for the crime of 'resisting a public official in a chain manner'.'

A statement on the matter also came from Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya. In a post on the X platform, Yerlikaya used the following expressions:

'Attacking our female police officer on duty with a vehicle is not just a threat to one police officer; it is a threat to our state, our peace and security, and public order. The Republic of Turkey is a state of law. This reckless and cruel attack will receive the response it deserves before the law.

We stand and will continue to stand against all forms of physical or verbal attacks against our police officers who are on duty day and night for the peace and security of our nation. Our police are at the service of our nation; they are at its command and are always by its side.'
