Poverty map of Turkey released: Poorest cities are in the same region

The Turkish Statistical Institute's (TÜİK) Income and Living Conditions Survey has revealed poverty rates and the poorest cities in Turkey. Poverty, which has increased due to the impact of high inflation, is particularly concentrated in a specific geographical region.

Rising inflation in Turkey is making living conditions even more difficult for low-income citizens.

The fact that pensions and the minimum wage remain below the hunger threshold is causing poverty to become more widespread. The latest report published by TÜİK, based on 2023 data, revealed that the poverty rate across Turkey is 21.7 percent.

POOREST CITIES AND REGIONS

According to the research, while the TR82 region was identified as the poorest region in Turkey, Kastamonu, Çankırı, and Sinop, which are located in this region, stood out as the poorest cities.

Istanbul was also among the poorest regions.

In addition, the TRA2 region, which covers the provinces of Ağrı, Kars, Iğdır, and Ardahan, also drew attention with its high poverty rates.

REGIONS WITH THE LEAST POVERTY

On the other hand, the TRC1 region, which includes Gaziantep, Adıyaman, and Kilis, was among the regions with the lowest poverty rate at 10.4 percent.

In the TRC3 region, which includes Mardin, Batman, Şırnak, and Siirt, this rate was determined to be 12.9 percent.

Şanlıurfa and Diyarbakır are also among the places where poverty is less prevalent.

Data could not be collected for the region containing the provinces of Hatay, Kahramanmaraş, and Osmaniye due to the earthquake.
