Price hike for gevrek in İzmir
The famous İzmir gevrek will be sold for 12.5 liras starting in July. Rising costs were cited as the reason for the price increase.
A price hike has been applied to gevrek, which is frequently consumed in İzmir, especially for breakfast.
Citing rising costs, the İzmir Chamber of Pide and Gevrek Makers requested a price increase for gevrek. Evaluating the request, the Union of Chambers of Tradesmen and Artisans of İzmir approved the sale of a 90-gram gevrek for 12.5 liras, replacing the previous price of 10 liras for 100 grams.
Accordingly, starting in July, gevrek will be sold for 12.5 liras.
Stating that the gevrek price increase application they submitted 3 months ago was accepted to be effective as of July, Şükrü Erişen, President of the İzmir Chamber of Pide and Gevrek Makers, said, “As is known, with the amendment made to the ‘Regulation on the Amendment of the Regulation on Price Tariffs of Goods and Services Produced by Tradesmen and Artisans,’ a positive opinion must be obtained from the Ministry of Trade when determining the price of simit. There is a simit price chaos throughout Turkey, not just in our province. In many major cities, including Istanbul and Ankara, the price increase has not yet been implemented. We hope that the prolongation of the difficulties and processes is due to the new regulation coming into effect. Otherwise, our valuable artisans who do this work will gradually decrease, and there will be problems regarding the sustainability of simit, which is one of the most important elements of Turkey’s street food culture,” he said.
Continuing his remarks, Erişen noted the following:
“Although we submitted our price increase request with cost reports, the prolongation of the approval process negatively affected both our tradesmen and our gevrek masters. During this price increase process, many products received price hikes, and our input costs increased. Thus, the price increase we received has lost its significance. The last price increase for gevrek was 10 months ago; everyone is aware of the rising increases in input prices. Therefore, we believe that our fellow citizens in İzmir will understand the price increase.”
