Prof. Dr. Ahmet Ercan draws attention to that region following the Adıyaman earthquake: 'I hope that is the case...'

According to information on the website of the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), a 4.3-magnitude earthquake occurred in the Battalgazi district of Malatya during the night hours.

The earthquake was determined to be at a depth of 9.28 kilometers. The Kandilli Observatory, however, announced the epicenter of the earthquake as Sincik, Adıyaman.

Following the earthquake, Prof. Dr. Övgün Ahmet Ercan made statements on his social media account.

Ercan noted the following in his posts:

"The small 4.3-magnitude earthquake that occurred in Sincik, Adıyaman, at midnight on April 17 was alarming. However, it is a non-destructive aftershock of the February 6, 2023, earthquakes. I would be surprised if a major earthquake follows it. Our love for Adıyaman is great.

The absence of expected medium-to-large aftershocks following the 4 major earthquakes on February 6 indicates that the tension accumulated deep in the Earth's crust in the region has been largely released. I hope that is the case.

What surprised me most during the earthquakes in the 11 provinces was the destruction at the rocky foothills of Ahir Mountain in Kahramanmaraş. The reason is building aging and structural construction defects. The duty of the administration is to identify defective land and structures before an earthquake occurs and to ensure the life safety of the public before an earthquake strikes."
