Footage emerges of grandmother and grandchild jumping from window during fire in Bursa

A fire broke out yesterday evening on the top floor of a 3-story building on Özgül Street in the Yenidoğan neighborhood of Bursa's Gürsu district. The flames, which grew in a short time, trapped 65-year-old Neriman G. and her 7-year-old granddaughter Sümeyye G. inside. Trapped between smoke and fire, the only way out for the pair was through the window.

SHE DROPPED HER GRANDCHILD FIRST

While citizens in the vicinity immediately prepared for a rescue by holding out blankets, the grandmother, with great courage, first dropped her grandchild down. Little Sümeyye landed on the blankets and was rescued without injury. Those moments were captured second by second on the mobile phones of those nearby. The crowd erupted in joy with the child's rescue.

"BETTER THE PROPERTY THAN THE PERSON"

After ensuring her grandchild was safe, the grandmother jumped as well, hitting the balcony of the floor below before falling onto the blankets. It was learned that the pair, who were taken to the hospital by medical teams, are in good condition. Her son, Ferhat Gökçe, described what happened as follows:

"My mother and my niece tried to get down on their own. When they couldn't, they had to jump from the window. Thank God they are okay, but they have fractures in their bodies. Better the property than the person."

FOOTAGE EMERGES

Footage of the fire spread quickly on social media. In the videos, it is clearly seen that the grandchild falls into the arms of the citizens in the air and the grandmother lets herself go just as the flames engulf the window. It was stated that the grandmother and her grandchild, who were discharged after their treatment at the hospital, are in good health, though the grandmother has a broken leg and bruising on her lower back.
