Young child found with hands and arms tied in Mardin

A child, whose identity has not yet been determined, was found with their hands and arms tied in a house in the Savurkapı neighborhood of Mardin's Artuklu district; the child was rescued by local youths and taken to the hospital.

Speaking on the matter, the landlord Necmettin Özgün said, “This family was living in my house as tenants. I rented them my house to help them out. They had been living there as tenants for about 3 months. I don't know them very well; I only saw them when I passed by the house because they were my tenants."

Özgün continued as follows:

"The incident happened yesterday, and we learned yesterday that the child was being tortured in this way. We are very saddened by this situation. This family was evicted from their previous home as well. We believe that this child was subjected to this torture before. God sent this child to me so that I would take this family as tenants in my own house, and this is how this incident came to light. It is a good thing it did.

A child has been saved from torture. I am very sad about this situation, but I am glad that I rented this house to them, and that the child was saved as a result. If this child had been somewhere else, perhaps no one would have noticed. They appeared to be very good people from the outside. That is why we rented them our house. If I had known there were such people, I would not have taken them in, but I am very happy that the child was saved."

An investigation into the incident has been launched, and the mother and father have been taken into custody.
