1.35 billion Euro investment from German giant Rheinmetall

Rheinmetall, one of the leading names in the German defense sector, has drawn attention with a major move it has recently carried out. Following approval from the European Commission, the company has expanded its product range by incorporating the shipyards of Naval Vessels Lürssen (NVL) and Blohm+Voss, which belong to the Lürssen Group.

Thanks to this transaction, which was completed for approximately 1.35 billion euros, Rheinmetall has gained military shipbuilding capacity alongside its traditional land defense products.

The European Union's competition authorities approved this move on the grounds that it carries "limited market risk," thereby further strengthening Rheinmetall's position in the defense industry. This strategic step by the company has enabled it to shift toward a new business model focused on producing integrated solutions between land and naval platforms.

In particular, changes in the security environment in Europe in recent years and increasing budgets in the defense sector have led companies to diversify their expertise to cover different weapon systems.

Alongside tank and air defense systems, Rheinmetall has now taken on the production of modern warships, assuming the identity of one of Europe's most comprehensive defense industry groups.

THE STRATEGIC IMPORTANCE OF THE RIJEKA SHIPYARD

Another remarkable aspect of this giant acquisition is that Rheinmetall has added important shipyards to its portfolio, including the one in the city of Rijeka, Croatia. The shipyard in Rijeka, which stands out with its location near the Slovenian border, will play a key role in the construction and maintenance of various military naval vessels in the coming period.

The contributions that the Rijeka facility brings to the European defense ecosystem are summarized under three main headings:

First, this shipyard will be one of the leading centers for the production and repair of advanced surface combatants and other military naval vessels. Second, the facility's geographical location offers an ideal base for providing logistical and technical support to NATO's Adriatic and Mediterranean operations. Finally, through Rijeka, it will be possible to respond more quickly to orders for patrol and coastal combat ships, as well as current weapon and sensor systems, for which international demand is rapidly increasing.

Such mergers and acquisitions in the defense sector in recent years are turning firms into large-scale structures that not only specialize in a single area but also offer integrated defense solutions.
