At least 189 decomposing bodies have been found at a funeral home in the U.S. state of Colorado.

Authorities took action following complaints of strong odors coming from the funeral home named 'The Return to Nature'. An official who entered the funeral home described the scene as 'horrific and dangerous'.

According to BBC Turkish, officials stated that more bodies could be found as the investigation continues. Allen Cooper, a police official from the city of Fremont where the funeral home is located, announced that they are trying to provide support to the families affected by the events while the investigation is ongoing. As part of the investigation, which began in early October, Jon Hallford is accused of “improper storage of human remains.”

The 'environmentally friendly' funeral home, located in a town called Penrose, claims that no chemicals are used in the burial process and that bodies are placed in biodegradable coffins.

Green funeral homes are permitted in the state, but remains must be buried within 24 hours or stored in refrigerators under proper conditions. In previous statements, authorities had indicated that identifying the bodies through DNA and fingerprint analysis could take a long time.
