19 candidates to compete: Date set for Iraq's presidential election

The Iraqi Parliament Presidency met today to determine the date for the session in which the presidential election will be held. In the statement made by the Parliament Presidency, it was noted that the meeting was held with political leaders, and it was stated that in addition to discussing draft laws to be included in the agenda of future sessions, the completion of voting regarding permanent committees was also addressed. At the meeting, it was announced that the presidential election would be held on April 11 to end the political deadlock in the country and complete the constitutional process.

The Parliament Presidency addressed the ongoing security and economic challenges in the country and called on political leaders to assume their national responsibilities and cooperate to complete the constitutional processes.

19 CANDIDATES WILL COMPETE IN THE ELECTION

19 candidates are competing for the presidency. Among the candidates, Fuad Hussein, the candidate of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) led by Masoud Barzani, and Nizar Amidi, the candidate of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) led by Bafel Talabani, are among the prominent names. After the president is elected and takes the constitutional oath, according to Article 76 of the constitution, the candidate of the political party with the most seats has 15 days to be tasked with forming the government. The designated prime minister is then required to present their cabinet and government program within 30 days.
