2.8 billion people to be affected by heatwaves by 2090

The United Nations International Organization for Migration (IOM) has reported that the number of people worldwide who could be exposed to heatwaves by 2090 could reach up to 2.8 billion.

The report notes that approximately 1.3 billion people, representing nearly half of those potentially affected by heatwaves, are projected to live in South Asia, and states that South Asia has witnessed the displacement of 59.7 million people over the last 10 years due to climate change.

The report emphasizes that low and high warming scenarios represent different trajectories for future greenhouse gas concentrations, which would lead to a global temperature increase of below 2 degrees Celsius and 3-4 degrees Celsius, respectively, by the year 2100.

The report states that the number of people globally who could be exposed to heatwaves by 2090 could rise to 2.8 billion.

Noting that 2023 remains the hottest year on record, the report emphasizes that the effects of climate change are increasingly being seen on people from the Horn of Africa to the Pacific Islands.
