Japan's National Police Agency (Keisatsu-chō) has released preliminary statistics on suicides across the country in 2023.

According to the preliminary data, the number of people who died by suicide nationwide last year decreased by 63 compared to the previous year, falling to 21,818. It was stated that 14,854 of those who ended their lives were men, and 6,964 were women.

Students accounted for 1,010 of the total, with 507 of those being at the elementary, middle, and high school levels.

HEALTH ISSUES, COST OF LIVING, AND WORKING CONDITIONS RANK IN THE TOP 3

According to the data, health issues, cost of living, and working conditions ranked as the top three reasons for suicide, in that order.

Accordingly, the rate in 2023 stands out as one of the highest since 1980, when comparable data began to be recorded.

A Ministry of Health official stated, "We will promote comprehensive measures to create a society where no one has to die by suicide."
