A 4-day period of mourning has been declared in the country following the death of 88-year-old former Greek Prime Minister Kostas Simitis. According to reports from the Greek state broadcaster ERT, the funeral expenses will be covered by the public budget. Flags will be flown at half-mast at all public institutions for 4 days.

WHO IS FORMER GREEK PRIME MINISTER KOSTAS SIMITIS?

Born in 1936, Simitis was a founding member of PASOK, which held power multiple times in Greece. While serving as a minister several times during PASOK governments, Simitis served as both party leader and Prime Minister from 1996 to 2004.

Having studied law and economics, Simitis taught as an academic at many universities.
