6.2 magnitude earthquake strikes Japan

Japan's Hokkaido prefecture has been shaken by a 6.2 magnitude earthquake. According to information obtained from the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the earthquake was recorded at 05:23 local time at a depth of 80 kilometers. It was announced that there is no risk of a tsunami following the tremor, which was also felt strongly in the Aomori and Iwate prefectures in addition to Hokkaido.

Hokkaido Electric Power Company announced that no abnormalities were observed at the Tomari Nuclear Power Plant. Railway operator JR Hokkaido reported that some local train services were temporarily suspended, but that the Hokkaido Shinkansen high-speed train services were continuing as normal.

JAPAN WAS SHAKEN BY A 7.7 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE

Last week, a 7.7 magnitude earthquake occurred in Japan with its epicenter off the coast of Sanriku, and a tsunami warning was issued for Iwate prefecture and some parts of Hokkaido prefecture following the earthquake.

Tsunami waves ranging in height from 10 to 80 centimeters were observed in some regions. Authorities had warned that a more severe "mega earthquake" could occur within one week.
