80-year-old bomb explodes

The Hanau city administration announced that there were no injuries as a result of the explosion, but the pressure wave caused broken glass and structural damage. Detailed inspections have been launched to determine the extent of the damage following the incident.

Authorities stated that the pressure wave generated during the explosion was stronger than anticipated. It was noted that the barrier consisting of 15 containers, which had been set up to protect surrounding structures, could not completely prevent the damage. Two experts from the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) were sent to the area to assess the condition of the buildings. Some streets were temporarily closed for security reasons, and additional measures were taken against the risk of theft.

Approximately 60 people affected by the explosion will be met by fire department teams and psychosocial support units upon their return home. Officials announced that they would assist citizens in entering their apartments in a controlled manner.

Although initial examinations suggested the munition was a phosphorus incendiary bomb, subsequent analysis revealed this was incorrect. A spokesperson for the Darmstadt Regional Council explained that the object detonated was a type known as a "stör bomb" (interference bomb).
