A difficult decision for Ukraine: Territorial concessions on the agenda
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that for Ukraine to achieve peace, it must make concessions regarding the territories currently under Russian control.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio made significant remarks to reporters while in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to meet with Ukrainian officials. Rubio stated that for Ukraine to reach peace, it must make concessions regarding the territories that Russia has controlled since 2014.
Rubio emphasized that both Russia and Ukraine must realize that a military solution is not possible. "The Russians cannot take over all of Ukraine, and it is quite difficult for Ukraine to push the Russians back to their 2014 positions" he said.
Rubio expressed that in future negotiations with Moscow, it is important to determine what conditions Russia is willing to accept. "We really don't know how far apart they are" he said, drawing attention to the uncertainty.
Stating that the U.S. stance on military aid to Ukraine could change depending on Ukraine's commitment to peace, Rubio added, "I assure you that we will not provide military aid to the Russians" he said.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is also in Saudi Arabia. Local media reported that meetings are planned between Zelenskyy, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and US Secretary of State Rubio.
