Abortion law proves decisive in elections

In the November 7 elections, where US citizens cast votes on various issues ranging from gubernatorial candidates to local referendums, Democratic candidates managed to secure more votes than their opponents in states such as Kentucky, Ohio, and Virginia, where Republicans were also competitive.

While Democratic Governor Andy Beshear secured a second term by being re-elected in Kentucky, a state where Republicans typically hold sway in general elections, Democrats also maintained their dominance in the state congressional special election held in Rhode Island, the state with the smallest land area in the country.

In Virginia, Democrats outperformed their Republican rivals in both chambers of the state legislature, maintaining their majority in the state senate and taking control of the House of Delegates from the Republicans.

In yesterday's elections, Democrats also won an empty seat on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, securing a majority in the court's administration.

Meanwhile, Republican Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves managed to retain his seat against Democratic candidate Brandon Presley, known as a relative of the famous American rock 'n' roll star Elvis Presley.

Democratic view prevails in referendum on abortion rights

The referendum in Ohio, a state where Republican voters hold the majority, also resulted in the victory of the view supporting the protection of abortion rights.

The results of the referendum in the state, which former US President Donald Trump won by a 8 percent margin in the 2020 elections, served as a response to Republicans who attempted to repeal the state law protecting abortion rights in August.

On the other hand, commentaries in the US media noted that the success achieved by the Democratic wing in the November 7 elections cannot be a benchmark for the 2024 US presidential elections, as presidential candidates were not on the ballots used in these elections.

Every two years, the American public goes to the polls to elect all members of the House of Representatives, who serve 2-year terms, and one-third of senators, who serve 6-year terms.

Apart from this, American voters cast ballots on specific dates in special elections held at the state level to determine governors, local council members, and court members.
