Afghan breakdancer Talash disqualified from Paris 2024 due to politically charged outfit

Afghan breakdancer Manizha Talash, also known as 'b-girl Talash' on social media, was disqualified from the Paris 2024 Summer Olympic Games on Friday for wearing a cape featuring the phrase 'Free Afghan Women' during her pre-qualifying battle against India Sardjoe.

In a statement released by the World DanceSport Federation (WDSF), it was noted that Talash was "disqualified due to a political slogan on her attire during the pre-qualifier battle."

Talash had fled Kabul and sought asylum in Spain after the Taliban came to power in Afghanistan in 2021.

In a statement made before the Olympics, she commented on her residence in Spain by saying, "I am here because I want to reach my dreams."

Talash was included in the Paris 2024 roster last May following a decision by the International Olympic Committee.

She participated in the tournaments with the Refugee Olympic Team. The team was represented by 37 athletes who, like the Afghan dancer, hold "refugee" status.

She was disqualified due to her outfit carrying a political message during the pre-qualifying match. Even if this decision had not been made, the result would not have changed; the jury panel had already favored Talash's opponent, Sardjoe.
