AI agreement between Google and the Pentagon: Company in turmoil

It has been alleged that the US-based technology company Google has signed an agreement with the US Department of Defense (Pentagon) that allows for the use of artificial intelligence systems in covert operations. This development has brought about discussions within the company as well.

AI COLLABORATION FOR COVERT OPERATIONS

According to a report by "The Information" based on a source close to the matter, an agreement has been reached that allows the Pentagon to use Google's artificial intelligence models in certain covert activities. Within the scope of the agreement, it was stated that artificial intelligence systems could be used "in accordance with the government's lawful purposes."

Furthermore, it was noted that the agreement includes provisions for Google to adjust its artificial intelligence safety filters and protection mechanisms in line with the requests of public authorities.

The text emphasized that the parties agreed that artificial intelligence technologies should not be used for mass surveillance or autonomous weapon systems (including target acquisition) without human oversight. However, it was also noted that the agreement does not grant Google any oversight or veto power in operational decision-making processes.

REACTION WITHIN THE COMPANY

On the other hand, approximately 600 people working within Google opposed the collaboration in a letter addressed to CEO Sundar Pichai.

In the letter, employees working in the field of artificial intelligence drew attention to the potential risks of this technology and argued that the company should not be involved in secret military projects. The employees stated that they bear responsibility against unethical and dangerous use cases of artificial intelligence.

The letter pointed to risks such as lethal autonomous weapons and large-scale surveillance systems, warning that the decisions to be made could have serious consequences for the company's reputation and global standing.
