Amnesty for prisoners in Iran on the anniversary of Prophet Muhammad's birth

In Iran, 2,887 prisoners are set to receive a pardon or a reduction in their sentences to mark the anniversary of the birth of Prophet Muhammad.

According to a written statement from the office of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, the regulation regarding the sentences of 2,887 prisoners was implemented following a proposal by Judiciary Chief Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei and the approval of the Supreme Leader.

It was stated that the decision covers prisoners sentenced by Revolutionary Courts, State Penal Institutions, and the Judicial Organization of the Armed Forces in honor of the Prophet Muhammad's birthday. Of these prisoners, 1,291 were granted a full pardon, while 1,596 received sentence reductions.

As a result of the decision, the death sentences of 59 prisoners were commuted to prison terms.

Under Article 110 of the Iranian Constitution, the Supreme Leader has the authority to pardon prisoners. At the request of the Iranian Judiciary, Khamenei issues pardons for certain prisoners every year, particularly on the anniversary of the revolution, as well as on holidays and other religious occasions.
