Another judicial hurdle for Trump's executive orders: Ruling to apply nationwide

U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order in his first week in office that blocked the acquisition of citizenship by birth. A judge in the state of Maryland has ruled for a nationwide stay on the executive order.

U.S. District Judge for Maryland Deborah Boardman heard the complaints of 5 pregnant women in court whose babies would remain without identification if birthright citizenship were not granted. The judge ruled that the executive order, which halts the practice of granting citizenship to children born in the U.S. to immigrant families, is unconstitutional.

Stating that the denial of citizenship rights would lead to irreparable harm, Boardman issued a nationwide preliminary injunction. Blocking Trump's decision to end birthright citizenship, Boardman emphasized that the executive order contradicts 125 years of Supreme Court precedent.

Maryland state judge Deborah Boardman was appointed by former U.S. President Joe Biden. The Trump administration is expected to take the decision to an appeals court and subsequently move the matter to the Supreme Court for a final ruling.

In the U.S., approximately 150 thousand children gain the right to become U.S. citizens each year because they are born within the country's borders. On January 20, the day of his inauguration, Trump signed an executive order removing the regulation that allowed children born in the country to receive automatic citizenship.

18 Democratic state attorneys general had filed lawsuits against the executive order. It was noted that judges in other states could also issue similar preliminary injunctions.

In Seattle, U.S. District Judge John Coughenour had temporarily blocked Trump's executive order preventing the acquisition of birthright citizenship on January 23, citing that it was unconstitutional.
