Approval for digital Schengen visa

The Council of the European Union (EU) has adopted new rules prepared for the digitalization of Schengen visas.

With the decision taken by the EU Council, the political process for the launch of the "digital Schengen visa" application has been completed, leaving only technical arrangements to be finalized.

The decisions taken today will be published in the Official Journal of the EU after they are signed and will enter into force 20 days thereafter. The start date for digital visa applications will be announced once the technical work regarding the visa platform to be prepared is finished.

Can be downloaded to mobile devices

When the EU's new application enters into force, the visas currently affixed to passports will become digital and will be issued online as 2D barcodes. Visas will be downloadable to mobile devices. Visa applicants will be able to submit their visa requests online in many languages.

With the new system, applications will be processed through a single online platform. Digital copies of the necessary documents will be uploaded via this platform, and the visa fee will also be paid there.

Applicants will be notified which country is processing their application when they intend to visit multiple countries. The system will work in harmony with the border management systems and databases of EU countries.

Only those applying for a visa for the first time, those whose biometric data is no longer valid, and those who have obtained a new passport will be required to visit the consulates of Schengen countries.
