Assange's extradition to the US suspended

Good news has arrived at the London High Court for Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks who is being held in the UK after publishing numerous classified documents regarding crimes committed by the US in Iraq and Afghanistan.

In the case regarding Assange's extradition to the US, the Court ruled that the US must provide assurances that Assange will not face the death penalty, thereby suspending his extradition for the time being.

The court has given US authorities until April 16 to provide assurances that Assange will not be sentenced to death.

During the hearing, Assange's lawyers brought up the statement made by former US President Donald Trump in 2010 regarding the WikiLeaks founder, in which he said, "I think it should be like the death penalty."

The US wants to try 52-year-old Assange on 18 charges, all under the Espionage Act, for publishing classified documents.

The next hearing in the case regarding Assange's extradition to the US will be held on May 20.

EXTRADITION TO THE US WAS ORDERED IN 2021

The website WikiLeaks, founded by Assange, published documents in 2010 regarding crimes committed by the US in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Assange, whom the US accuses of espionage and whose extradition it has requested, took refuge in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London in 2012.

Assange was removed from the embassy and taken into custody in 2019, and was subsequently sent to prison for failing to meet bail conditions. While the High Court ruled in 2021 that Assange could be extradited to the US, Assange's lawyers appealed the decision in 2022.
