Assassination attempts against US presidents: 4 died, 5 survived

Former US President Donald Trump was the target of an assassination attempt at a rally he held in Pennsylvania.

While the attacker, who was reported to be 20 years old, was neutralized, Trump was wounded in the ear. One person at the rally lost their life.

The armed attack in which Trump was wounded has raised concerns about gun violence in the US and brought to mind past attacks and assassination attempts against presidents and presidential candidates.

4 US PRESIDENTS FELL VICTIM TO ASSASSINATIONS

Former US President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated on April 14, 1865, while attending a special performance of the comedy play "Our American Cousin" in Washington with his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln.

Lincoln, who passed away one day after the attack, became the first US president to be assassinated.

Two years before the assassination, during the Civil War, Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which granted freedom to slaves within the Confederacy, and his support for the rights of Black people was cited as the reason for his killing.

The second president to fall victim to an assassination in the US was James Garfield on July 2, 1881.

Garfield was subjected to an armed attack in the 6th month of his term.

The third assassination in the country was carried out against the 25th US President William McKinley on September 6, 1901.

McKinley was shot while shaking hands with people after a speech he gave in New York.

The last fatal assassination in the US was carried out against the 35th US President John F. Kennedy in November 1963.

Kennedy was subjected to an armed attack during his visit to Dallas with his wife, Jacqueline Kennedy.

Kennedy, who was taken to the hospital, passed away a short time later.

5 PRESIDENTS SURVIVED

While former US presidents have become targets during campaigns for their second terms, former US President Theodore Roosevelt became a target of bullets on October 14, 1912, during the election campaign for his second bid.

Roosevelt survived this attack, in which he was shot in the chest at a rally in Milwaukee, with injuries.

By September 5, 1975, the target of assassinations was this time the 38th US President Gerald Ford.

Ford was subjected to two assassination attempts within a few weeks in the same year and survived them without injury.

In the first assassination attempt, Ford was saved when the attacker's gun failed to fire, and on September 22, he escaped being targeted by bullets when a female attacker missed outside a hotel in San Francisco.

The 40th US President Ronald Reagan was wounded as a result of an armed attack he was subjected to in March 1981 while walking toward his motorcade after a speech in the capital, Washington.

A hand grenade was thrown at the 43rd President of the country, George W. Bush, in 2005 while he was speaking at a rally he attended in Tbilisi with Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili. The grenade did not detonate because the pin was stuck due to a handkerchief wrapped very tightly around it.

US PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES ALSO TARGETED BY ATTACKS

In the US, where gun violence incidents occur frequently, presidential candidates as well as presidents have been targets of assassinations and attacks.

Former Attorney General and Democratic presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy was killed in an armed attack carried out in Los Angeles just minutes after his victory speech following his win in the 1968 California primaries.

Kennedy was a US Senator from New York and the brother of President John F. Kennedy, who had been assassinated 5 years earlier.

In 1972, the target of an armed attack was this time former Alabama Governor and presidential hopeful George Wallace.

Wallace was left paralyzed from the waist down as a result of an attack he was subjected to during an election campaign in Maryland.
