It has been reported that there are fatalities following a knife attack at an event in the city of Solingen, in Germany's North Rhine-Westphalia state.

According to reports in the German press, a person randomly stabbed people at a city festival in Solingen.

ATTACKER FLED

It was stated that the attacker fled the scene. It was noted that a large number of police and medical teams were dispatched to the area.

3 PEOPLE LOST THEIR LIVES

Wuppertal Police Spokesperson Alexander Kresta told reporters that at 21:37 local time, numerous witnesses called the police station to report that a person was attacking people with a knife.

Kresta shared the information that 3 people died in the attack.

The police spokesperson also noted that the attacker is being sought, that they do not have much information about the attacker, and that information will be gathered by interviewing witnesses, most of whom are in shock.

5 SERIOUSLY INJURED

According to the German news agency DPA, the number of seriously injured has risen to 5.

1 OF THE DECEASED IS A WOMAN

North Rhine-Westphalia Interior Minister Herbert Reul, who conducted inspections at the scene, said in a statement there that a very terrible event had occurred.

Expressing that his thoughts are with the relatives of the victims and the injured, Reul stated that for now, one can only pray for the recovery of the seriously injured.

Stating that the attacker randomly stabbed and killed people without provocation, Reul said, “Why, for what reason, why? No one knows. We cannot say anything about the motivation or the person right now. It is not even known who they are.”

Reul stated that the police are investigating and asked that there be no speculation.

Pointing out that 3 people lost their lives in the attack, he shared the information that 1 of the deceased was a woman and 2 were men.

Stating that the suspect attacked people directly, targeted vital areas of the body, and then disappeared, Reul said, “We must be careful not to speculate. We currently know that a man did this. We don't know more. We don't know where he came from, what he said, or why he did it.”

According to the Solinger Tageblatt newspaper, the attack took place at a festival held to mark the 650th anniversary of the city of Solingen.

The report noted that after the attack, the police asked the public to leave the city center.

In a statement from the Solingen Municipality, it was announced that the events scheduled for August 24 and 25 at the festival, which is named the “Festival of Diversity” and was planned to continue until Sunday, August 25, have been canceled.
