Attack on MP's home! Explosive device made from gas canister planted
An explosive device made from a gas canister was planted at the Thessaloniki home of Stratos Simopoulos, a member of parliament for Greece's ruling New Democracy (ND) party, and detonated early in the morning.
According to the Greek public news agency AMNA, the device, prepared using a camping gas canister, exploded in front of Simopoulos's apartment building. There were no casualties or injuries in the incident, but minor material damage occurred at the building's entrance.
In a statement to the local ERT channel, Simopoulos noted that the explosion occurred with a loud noise, stating that it was initially thought to be a gas leak, but Counter-Terrorism units determined that the explosion was caused by the gas canister.
The MP also linked the motivation for the incident to his positions, which he described as "strong political views." He added the comment, "The point is that when you have strong political views and you express them... you expect these from the usual suspects."
Counter-Terrorism units have launched an investigation into the attack. A detailed examination of the incident is ongoing.
