Biden's call for peace in Sudan: 'Avoid escalating tensions'

According to a written statement from the White House, Biden stated, "I call on the parties responsible for the suffering of the Sudanese people to withdraw their forces, facilitate unhindered humanitarian access, and resume negotiations to end this war."

Emphasizing that attacks causing "disproportionate" harm to civilians in Sudan must stop and that the bombardments causing severe damage to the country's infrastructure must also end, Biden included the statement, "For the sake of Sudan's future and for all the people of Sudan, we call on all parties to this conflict to end the violence and avoid escalating tensions."

CIVIL WAR IN SUDAN

The power struggle between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), who jointly staged a coup against the government formed with civilian participation following the overthrow of Omar al-Bashir's 30-year rule in a popular uprising, has been ongoing for approximately 17 months. Peace initiatives launched to end the war have remained inconclusive.

According to the UN, as a result of the conflict in Sudan, which is experiencing one of the world's largest displacement and hunger crises, more than 20 thousand people have lost their lives, more than 10 million people have been displaced, and more than 25 million people are in need of humanitarian aid.
