Bill on 'extending the term of Zelensky's powers' approved in Ukraine

Yaroslav Zheleznyak, a member of the Holos Party in Ukraine, stated in a post on his Telegram account that the parliament voted on a draft resolution to support the extension of President Zelensky's powers until elections are held.

Zheleznyak reported that 268 deputies voted 'yes' to the bill titled "Supporting Democracy in Ukraine in the Context of Russian Aggression." 

The draft resolution submitted to the parliament included the following statements:

"The Parliament of Ukraine emphasizes the necessity of adhering to the principle of institutional continuity of power as provided for in Ukrainian law, especially under the legal regime of martial law, and stresses that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky must exercise his powers in accordance with the first part of Article 108 of the Constitution of Ukraine until the newly elected president takes office."

The draft resolution on extending the term of Zelensky's powers "until the newly elected president of Ukraine takes office" failed to pass in the first vote held yesterday.

Zelensky has been serving as the President of Ukraine since 2019.

Arguing that it is impossible to hold presidential elections due to the ongoing war in his country, Zelensky states that this is why the elections in question were not held in 2024.
