A boat that departed from The Gambia carrying more than 180 people capsized off the coast of Mauritania; 38 people have been rescued.
A boat that set sail from The Gambia and was reportedly carrying more than 180 people has capsized off the coast of Mauritania. The United Nations International Organization for Migration (IOM) shared that 38 people were rescued in the incident, while at least 143 people are either dead or missing.
''THEY DRIFTED FOR 25 DAYS''
It was reported that the boat had been drifting at sea for 25 days. Details regarding the condition of the survivors and the efforts being carried out for the passengers reported missing have not yet been clarified.
Numerous deadly accidents have occurred in recent years along the maritime routes used by irregular migrants attempting to reach Europe from the West African coast. The latest incident off the coast of Mauritania has brought the loss of life caused by dangerous journeys in the region back to the agenda.
