Brain-eating amoeba panic: More than 100 people rushed to hospitals
Following the death of one person in Israel due to a brain-eating amoeba and the hospitalization of a child with similar symptoms, it has been reported that more than 100 people have sought medical attention.
Reports in the Israeli local press stated that a brain-eating amoeba was detected in two people who had been swimming at a water park in northern Israel.
It was stated that the 25-year-old man among these individuals has died, while the 10-year-old child, whose condition is serious, continues to receive treatment in the hospital.
It was noted that the Ministry of Health has ordered the closure of the water park in question. The ministry also requested that individuals who visited this park in the last two weeks and are experiencing symptoms such as fever, headache, or vomiting contact healthcare facilities.
Following this, it was reported that more than 100 people have applied to hospitals.
The amoeba, known as "Naegleria fowleri," enters the brain through the nose. Experts state that the survival rate for individuals infected with this type of amoeba is extremely low.
HOW IS THE BRAIN-EATING AMOEBA TRANSMITTED?
Naegleria fowleri, also known as the brain-eating amoeba, is transmitted through stagnant water such as muddy water, lakes, and swimming pools. The microscopic, single-celled Naegleria fowleri, which causes infection in the brain and is often fatal, enters the human body through the nose. The amoeba, which is mostly found in fresh water such as lakes, rivers, and canals, is not transmitted from person to person. Since Naegleria fowleri is a heat-loving amoeba, it is known that an increase in cases is expected due to global warming.
