Budget bill backed by Trump passes US Senate: All eyes now on the House of Representatives

In the US, with only hours left before a potential government shutdown, a critical step has been taken by the Senate. The government funding measure, supported by US President Donald Trump, was passed following a vote in the Senate and sent to the House of Representatives.

The decision was made in the shadow of rising political tension in Congress and increasing public pressure in recent days. The package, which was approved in Friday's vote, ensures that most of the federal government can continue its operations until September 30.

The bill provides only a temporary funding extension for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) budget. In this context, Congress is given a two-week period to address new regulations regarding immigration practices and security policies.

DEMOCRATS' DEMANDS ON THE TABLE

The primary reason for the deadlock in budget negotiations has been recent fatal incidents involving federal agents. The death of two protesters during an intervention by federal agents in Minneapolis sparked a fierce reaction among Democrats. Democratic senators clearly stated that they would not support the comprehensive budget package unless Congress brings to the agenda a regulation that mandates the disclosure of federal agents' identities under certain conditions, introduces stronger judicial oversight for search and detention processes, and ensures the active participation of local and state authorities in investigations.

NOTABLE MESSAGE FROM SCHUMER

Speaking after the vote, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer emphasized that what is happening is not just a budget debate. Drawing attention to the process, Schumer said, "The country is reaching a breaking point. The American people want Congress to step in and force change. This vote is a reflection of the demands for public safety and accountability." Many senators from both parties also called for comprehensive investigations into armed interventions involving federal agents, particularly the events in Minneapolis.

TRUMP'S CALL TO BOTH PARTIES

US President Trump stated that a government shutdown would have negative consequences for the country and sent a rare message of consensus to Senate Democrats. Addressing Republican and Democratic lawmakers in a statement before the vote, Trump said, "A much-needed bipartisan 'YES' vote should be cast for the good of the country." This statement was interpreted as a sign that a common ground, albeit temporary, had been established between Trump and Schumer, who have long been engaged in harsh polemics.

HOUSE STAGE UNCERTAIN

The bill passed the Senate with 71 votes to 29. However, the fact that the House of Representatives is not expected to return to Washington until Monday means that the federal government could face the risk of a partial shutdown throughout the weekend until the vote is held.

JOHNSON: VOTE PLANNED FOR MONDAY

House Speaker Mike Johnson, who met with Republican lawmakers via teleconference on Friday, announced that the vote is aimed to be held on Monday evening. However, Johnson also stated that there is no clear picture regarding the extent of support the package will find in the House.
