Cargo plane crashes in the US: Multiple dead and injured

The toll of the accident, which occurred when a cargo plane that took off from Louisville International Airport in the US state of Kentucky crashed seconds after takeoff, has begun to become clear. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear announced that according to initial findings, at least 3 people died and 11 were injured, some critically. Describing the accident as "catastrophic," Beshear noted that there were commercial businesses in the area where the plane crashed and stated, "We expect the number of dead and injured to rise."

WARNING ISSUED FOR AREA RESIDENTS TO SEEK SHELTER IN SAFE AREAS

In a statement from the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD), residents were urged not to approach the crash site and its surroundings, saying, "This is an active scene where fire and debris pose a safety risk. Stay away from the area." It was stated that the initial shelter-in-place warning issued to residents living within a 5-mile (approximately 8 km) radius of the airport was later expanded to cover the entire area from the north of the airport to the Ohio River.

Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg also described the accident as an "incredible tragedy that will never be forgotten." Emphasizing that all emergency agencies in the city have been deployed to respond to the crash site, Greenberg said, "There are many injured and the fire is still burning. Many roads in the area are closed, please avoid approaching the scene." Louisville International Airport management announced that the airport was temporarily closed to air traffic following the accident.

IT CRASHED SECONDS AFTER TAKEOFF

A McDonnell Douglas MD-11 cargo plane belonging to the company UPS, which took off from Louisville International Airport at around 17:15 to head to Honolulu, Hawaii, and had 3 crew members on board, crashed seconds after takeoff. While flames coming from the plane's engine during takeoff were captured on amateur cameras, a detailed investigation into the incident has been launched.
