Chinese scientist detained by FBI on biological smuggling charges

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has detained Chinese national Chengxuan Han on charges of smuggling biological materials into the U.S. and providing false information to federal authorities. FBI Director Kash Patel stated in a social media post that Han was apprehended at Detroit Metropolitan Airport.

It is alleged that Han sent four packages containing biological material related to roundworms from China to the U.S. Patel noted that this incident is the third case linked to the People's Republic of China to face similar charges recently.

According to a CNN report, Chengxuan Han studied at the Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan and was planning to participate in a one-year project at the University of Michigan.

U.S. Attorney Jerome Gorgon Jr. emphasized that such smuggling activities threaten national security. John Nowak, who manages field operations for U.S. Customs and Border Protection, stated that the rules for importing biological materials for research purposes are strict and clear, and that such illegal actions negatively impact the legitimate work of other academics.
