Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova announced that approximately 9,000 Alawites have sought safety at the Hmeimim airbase to escape the violence. Zakharova stated, 'These people fled to survive; they knew this was a matter of life and death.'

According to satellite imagery, a tent city consisting of military tents has been established at the Hmeimim base. The base commander has provided assurances that the Alawite community present there will be protected. The majority of the refugees are women and children.

Massacres targeting civilians in Syria began following clashes between the new administration and pro-Assad militias. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that more than 900 civilians, the majority of whom are Alawite, have been killed. Russia expressed concern over the developments in Syria and stated that it expects the perpetrators to be punished.
