Claim: Iran abandons uranium stockpile

As contacts aimed at reaching a lasting consensus between the US and Iran continue, the US-based newspaper The New York Times has brought a striking claim to the agenda. In the report, which the newspaper based on two senior US officials, it was alleged that Iran has agreed to abandon its highly enriched uranium stockpile as part of the negotiations being conducted with the US.

The report stated that the Tehran administration has not yet formed a definitive plan regarding the method and manner in which the uranium will be removed from the country. Officials stated that Iran has made a general commitment to abandon its uranium stockpile, and that technical details will be shaped in discussions that will begin after an agreement is reached.

The claim in question has not yet been confirmed by Iranian authorities.

IT WAS REPORTED THAT KHAMENEI HAD GIVEN INSTRUCTIONS

US President Donald Trump had previously emphasized in his statements that they would absolutely not allow Iran to possess nuclear weapons. Recently, it was reported to the public that Iran's supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, had given instructions that uranium enriched to levels close to nuclear weapon production should not be sent out of the country.

Officials had reported that the Tehran administration was of the opinion that removing the uranium stockpile from the country would leave it more vulnerable to potential future attacks by the US and Israel.

STRIKING TRUMP CLAIM FROM REUTERS

Israeli officials speaking to the British news agency Reuters had claimed that Trump had given assurances to Israel that the highly enriched uranium stockpile, which could be used in nuclear weapon production, would be removed from Iran.

The officials also stated that a special clause regarding this issue is expected to be included in a potential peace agreement.
