Counterfeit alcohol tragedy: 21 people, 18 men and 3 women, have lost their lives

According to a report by the Iranian Student News Network (SNN), Ali Abbasi, the Director General of Forensic Medicine in Mazandaran, announced that 21 people have died in the province due to severe poisoning caused by methyl alcohol.

Stating that 18 of the deceased were men and three were women, Abbasi noted that the consumption of methyl alcohol leads to blindness, kidney failure, and death.

Rasoul Zafermend, Head of the Treatment Unit at Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences, noted that 284 people have sought medical attention with symptoms of poisoning due to methyl alcohol consumption.

The Iranian doctor stated that, in addition to those who died, 4 of these individuals have lost their vision, and 81 are undergoing dialysis due to kidney failure.

In Iran, where alcohol is prohibited, it is reported that methyl alcohol is sometimes used in illicitly produced beverages because it is cheaper than ethyl alcohol, which leads to poisonings that result in deaths and vision loss.
