Countries with the shortest life expectancy in Europe announced
According to the latest data from Eurostat, life expectancy in the European Union rose to 81.7 years in 2024. However, there are significant differences in life expectancy between countries.
Life expectancy, which increased by 0.3 years compared to 2023, points to a long-term upward trend in Europe. However, despite this general increase, life expectancy in some countries is shorter than in others.
Italy and Sweden lead the way among countries with the longest life expectancy in Europe. In both countries, the average life expectancy was recorded at 84.1 years. Spain follows these countries closely with 84 years.
In contrast, Bulgaria stands out as the country with the lowest life expectancy in the European Union at 75.9 years. It is followed by Romania with 76.6 years and Latvia with 76.7 years.
In the post-COVID-19 pandemic period, life expectancy increased in many EU countries. While life expectancy rose in 24 out of 26 countries, Lithuania drew attention with an increase of 1.1 years. A one-year improvement was observed in Czechia, Latvia, and Romania. However, life expectancy in the Netherlands declined by 0.2 years, there was no change in Spain, and only a 0.1-year increase was seen in France.
In general, life expectancy in the European Union continues to increase steadily, but differences between countries remain significant.
