The U.S. Federal Appeals Court has ruled that former President Donald Trump does not have immunity and can be prosecuted on charges of conspiring to overturn the 2020 election.
Bad news has arrived for former U.S. President Donald Trump from the U.S. Federal Appeals Court. The District of Columbia Court of Appeals unanimously ruled that Trump does not have immunity and can be prosecuted on charges of conspiring to overturn the 2020 election.
The court stated that for the purposes of this case, former President Trump has become citizen Trump, adding, "Any immunity that may have protected him while he served as President no longer protects him against this prosecution."
Trump is expected to appeal the District of Columbia Court of Appeals' decision and take it to the U.S. Supreme Court.
TRUMP HAD CLAIMED HE HAD IMMUNITY
Trump, who is being tried in the U.S. on many charges, primarily the "classified documents" case, was indicted last August by Special Counsel Jack Smith in a 45-page indictment.
The indictment focused on Trump's role in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot and his interference in the 2020 U.S. presidential election results.
The indictment charged Trump with "conspiracy to defraud the United States," "conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding," "attempt to obstruct an official proceeding," and "conspiracy against rights."
Trump had requested that the charges be dismissed on the grounds that he had immunity because they were directed at him while he was in office.
STATEMENT FROM DONALD TRUMP REGARDING THE COURT DECISION
Former U.S. President Trump issued a statement regarding the Federal Appeals Court's ruling that he does not have immunity.
In his written statement, Trump said, "A President of the United States must have full immunity in order to properly function and do what has to be done for the good of our country."
Stating that the court's decision harms the nation, Trump emphasized that if the decision is not overturned, it will cause great damage to both the office of the presidency and the United States.
Stating that presidents will be afraid to act after leaving office for fear of retribution from the opposing side, Trump targeted U.S. President Joe Biden, saying, "I know from personal experience because I am living it right now."
Expressing that the decision will become a political weapon used for election interference, Trump said, "Our elections will be corrupted and under siege. Very bad and very dangerous for our nation. Save Presidential Immunity."
