Court upholds Sarkozy's prison sentence

The French Supreme Court has reached a decision regarding the appeal filed by former President Nicolas Sarkozy against the prison sentence given in a corruption case against him.

The court upheld the 3-year prison sentence, with 2 years suspended, handed down to Sarkozy in 2021 in a trial where he was accused of corruption and bribing a judge.

In a statement made through his lawyer Patrice Spinosi, Sarkozy announced that he would apply to the European Court of Human Rights to appeal the decision, stating, “My appeal to the European Court of Human Rights will unfortunately likely lead to France's conviction. I want to state once again clearly that I am innocent.”

Stating that Sarkozy will comply with the house arrest sentence by wearing an electronic tag, Spinosi announced that Sarkozy will continue to use all legal means at his disposal to prove his innocence.

LIBYA CASE

Sarkozy, who served as President of France between 2007 and 2012, is expected to stand trial next year in a case where he is accused of receiving illegal financial support from the then-Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi to conduct his 2007 presidential election campaign and running his campaign with this support. If found guilty in the Libya case, Sarkozy could face up to 10 years in prison. In the case, a total of 12 people, including 3 former ministers, will be tried alongside Sarkozy.
