Crisis grows in Tehran following attack on oil depots: 'Toxic rain' alert issued

The air strikes by the US and Israel against Iran continued to target energy infrastructure on their ninth day. Attacks on strategic fuel depots in and around the capital, Tehran, resulted in heavy damage to some facilities.

The Iranian Ministry of Petroleum confirmed that fuel depots in three separate regions, including the city of Karaj located west of Tehran, were targeted. Large-scale fires and leaks occurred at the facilities following the attacks.

OIL FIRES IN THE STREETS

The leakage of oil from the depots into the city's sewage lines led to flames reaching the streets in some areas. Local sources reported that images resembling "rivers of fire" formed, particularly on main arteries.

Images shared on social media highlighted fires spreading along some roads in the city and dense smoke. It was reported that a thick layer of fog formed over the skies of Tehran following the explosions, and the smell of burning oil could be felt in the air.

"TOXIC RAIN" WARNING

Authorities have warned the public against potential health risks due to chemical gases released following the damage to the fuel tanks in the attacks.

The Iranian Red Crescent drew attention to the possibility of "toxic rain" due to the chemical density that could form in the atmosphere. The organization stated that precipitation could cause severe chemical burns on the skin and lung damage, calling on citizens not to go outside under any circumstances during rainfall.

Officials also recommended that those caught outside should seek shelter under concrete or metal roofs rather than under trees. It was stated that areas that come into contact with the rain should be washed immediately with cold water and that clothing that has come into contact with it should be stored in sealed bags.

FUEL SALES SUSPENDED IN TEHRAN

Due to logistical problems arising after the attacks, restrictions were imposed on fuel distribution in the capital.

The Tehran Governorate initially implemented a quota on fuel purchases in the city. According to local sources, the daily purchase limit with personal fuel cards was reduced from 30 liters to 20 liters.

However, in the following hours, an Iranian official announced that fuel sales in the capital had been temporarily halted entirely due to security and supply issues.
