Critical warning from Guterres on Gaza: “The last lifelines are about to be severed”

United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated that the humanitarian crisis in Gaza is becoming increasingly severe and has reached alarming proportions.

In a message conveyed by UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric, Guterres pointed out that numerous attacks have been carried out in recent days, particularly targeting shelters and civilians attempting to obtain food, and that these attacks have cost the lives of dozens of Palestinians.

The Secretary-General stated, “The last lifelines for survival in Gaza are about to be severed,” describing the displacement of approximately 30,000 people due to evacuation orders issued by Israel in a single day as deeply concerning.

NO FUEL ENTRY FOR 17 WEEKS

Stating that finding a safe zone has become impossible and that basic needs are largely unmet, Guterres said, “International humanitarian law is clear. Civilians must be protected and their basic needs must be met.”

Emphasizing that fuel has not been able to enter Gaza for more than 17 weeks, Guterres warned that if fuel is not provided urgently, “Incubators will stop, ambulances will not be able to reach the wounded and sick, and water will not be able to be purified. Even the limited aid provided by the UN and its partners could be completely cut off.”

Reiterating that humanitarian aid must be delivered safely and continuously, Guterres recalled the large-scale aid plan prepared by the UN on the basis of humanitarian principles. Emphasizing that all parties must comply with their responsibilities under international law, the Secretary-General once again drew attention to the necessity of an immediate and lasting ceasefire.
