Death sentence upheld for suspect who attacked Azerbaijan's Embassy in Tehran
Iranian Judiciary Spokesperson Asghar Jahangir announced that the death sentence handed down to Yasin Huseynzade, the suspect who attacked Azerbaijan's Embassy in Tehran, has been upheld by the Supreme Court.
The death sentence given to Yasin Huseynzade, the suspect who attacked Azerbaijan's Embassy in Tehran, has been upheld in Iran.
Iranian Judiciary Spokesperson Asghar Jahangir provided information regarding the court process for the 2023 attack on the Azerbaijani Embassy in Tehran during his weekly press conference in the capital.
Jahangir announced that the death sentence issued for the individual named Yasin Huseynzade, who attacked the Azerbaijani Embassy, has been upheld by the Supreme Court.
Jahangir stated, "The decision has been sent to the Criminal Court for execution. The death penalty given to the attacker will be carried out with the approval of the victims' families."
ATTACK ON AZERBAIJAN'S TEHRAN EMBASSY
On January 27, 2023, an armed attack was carried out on Azerbaijan's Embassy in Tehran by an individual named Yasin Huseynzade. As a result of the attack, the embassy's head of security, Orhan Askerov, lost his life, and two security guards who attempted to stop the attack were injured. Tehran Police Chief Hossein Rahimi, in his statement regarding the attack on the Azerbaijani Embassy, had stated that the attacker was apprehended after the incident and that the attacker claimed in his initial testimony that he carried out the attack for personal reasons. Rahimi was later dismissed from his post.
Following the attack, on January 29, 2023, Azerbaijan suspended the operations of its Tehran Embassy and recalled all personnel to Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. In July 2024, Azerbaijan's Embassy in Tehran resumed its operations.
