Death toll from earthquakes in Japan rises to 213

In a statement released by the Ishikawa Prefectural Government, it was reported that the number of deaths from the series of earthquakes that occurred in the first week of January has risen to 213.

The statement noted that more than 25 thousand people are staying in 400 evacuation centers, 3 thousand 100 people remain stranded due to closed roads, and power outages are affecting nearly 60 thousand households.

The statement also recorded that 567 people injured in the earthquakes across the region are receiving treatment, and shared that search and rescue efforts are ongoing for 52 people who are currently unaccounted for.

The central government announced that it will prepare accommodation points for a total of 10 thousand people in the neighboring prefectures of Fukui, Toyama, and Niigata for those stranded in the earthquake zone.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), numerous earthquakes ranging in magnitude from 5 to 7 occurred on the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa and off its coast between January 1 and 5.
