Death toll from earthquakes in Japan rises to 215

The number of people who lost their lives in the earthquakes that struck Ishikawa Prefecture in western Japan and the coast of the Noto Peninsula in the region has risen to 215.

In a statement issued by the Ishikawa Prefectural Government, it was reported that the number of deaths from the numerous earthquakes that occurred in the first week of January has risen to 215.

The statement noted that more than 4,100 buildings were damaged, over 24,000 people are staying in evacuation centers, and 2,500 people remain stranded due to closed roads.

It was recorded that 567 people injured in the earthquakes across the region are receiving treatment, and information was shared that search efforts are continuing for 38 people who remain unaccounted for.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), numerous earthquakes ranging in magnitude from 5 to 7 occurred on the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa and off its coast between January 1 and 5.
