Death toll from earthquakes in Japan rises to 236
The number of people who lost their lives in the earthquakes that struck Ishikawa Prefecture in western Japan and the coast of the Noto Peninsula in the region has risen to 236.
In a statement released by the Ishikawa Prefectural Government, it was reported that the number of deaths from the numerous earthquakes that occurred in the first week of January has risen to 236.
The statement noted that 43,380 buildings were damaged in the earthquakes, more than 14,000 people are staying at 490 different evacuation centers, and power outages continue in 3,500 homes, while water supply disruptions persist in over 43,000 households.
Furthermore, it was recorded that 1,178 people injured in the earthquakes across the region are still receiving treatment.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), numerous earthquakes ranging in magnitude from 5 to 7 occurred on the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa and off its coast between January 1 and 5.
