Death toll from hydroelectric plant explosion in Italy rises to 7
The number of people who lost their lives in the explosion at the Bargi hydroelectric plant on Lake Suviana in Italy on April 9 has risen to 7, following the recovery of the last missing person.
The final death toll has been announced for the explosion that occurred on April 9 at the Bargi hydroelectric plant, owned by the energy company Enel, located on Lake Suviana in the Apennine Mountains between the Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna regions.
In a post on the X platform, the Italian Fire Brigade (Vigili del Fuoco) stated, "The recovery operations for the body of the last missing person from the explosion at the Suviana hydroelectric plant have been completed by fire department divers. The number of people who died in the incident has risen to 7."
Calogero Turturici, the Provincial Fire Chief leading the search and rescue efforts, said at a press conference at the scene that, according to findings obtained by his teams during the rescue operations, the explosion occurred while the workers were attempting to escape.
Efforts are underway to clarify the cause of the explosion at the Bargi hydroelectric plant within the scope of the investigation by the Bologna Public Prosecutor's Office.
Following the incident, labor unions in Italy held a general strike yesterday to protest the recent increase in worker deaths caused by workplace accidents in the country.
