The death toll from a stampede during a religious gathering in India's Uttar Pradesh state has risen to 116.
The death toll has increased following a stampede during a Hindu religious gathering in the Hathras district of India's Uttar Pradesh state. Officials announced that the number of lives lost in the stampede has risen to 116.
While the cause of the stampede has not yet been clarified, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath stated that the stampede occurred when the crowd began pushing toward the stage to touch a religious leader who was descending after the event.

Police emphasized that they have launched an investigation into the stampede and that action will be taken against those responsible. State Director General of Police Prashant Kumar said, "Negligence by officials will also be investigated, and action will be taken based on the report that will be ready within 24 hours."
