According to a statement from the police, the number of people who lost their lives has increased to 71 as part of ongoing search-and-rescue and identification efforts. Authorities reported that a criminal investigation has been launched by the Karachi Police due to negligence and the inadequacy of safety measures in the building regarding the fire.
The police announced that a first information report has been filed in accordance with the relevant articles of the Pakistan Penal Code. In the file where the government is listed as the complainant, the identities of the suspects are stated as "unknown persons" as the investigation report has not yet been completed. The report stated that there was serious negligence and carelessness during the fire, and that no safety measures had been taken in the building. It was noted that the electricity was cut off during the fire, which caused great difficulties for the people inside the building.
Furthermore, it was recorded that 13 of the 16 exit doors in the building were locked after 10:00 PM local time as part of a routine practice, which caused the situation to worsen. It was reported that no one has been held responsible for the incident within the scope of the file so far.

The fire, which broke out in the evening hours of January 17 in Pakistan, could not be extinguished for a long time. In the fire, which took about 2 days to bring under control and caused a portion of the shopping mall, which houses 1,200 stores in an area of 6,690 square meters, to collapse, all shops and warehouses on the ground floor were engulfed in flames. The Pakistani press reported that the fire started in a flower shop.
Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori had previously stated in a statement that the incident had "turned into a national tragedy."
