Death toll rises in Iran: Iranian officials remain silent

As the number of people who have lost their lives during the ongoing protests in Iran continues to rise rapidly, the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) has announced that the death toll has reached 538. It was reported that in the last two weeks, 490 demonstrators as well as 48 security personnel have lost their lives.

OVER 10 THOUSAND DETAINED

In the statement made by HRANA, it was noted that the number of people detained in demonstrations across the country has exceeded 10,600. This situation highlights the scale of the unrest and the protests in Iran.

NO OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM IRANIAN AUTHORITIES

However, no official statement has been made by Iranian authorities regarding the death toll. Furthermore, the Associated Press (AP) announced that it could not independently verify these figures. HRANA had previously reported the death toll as 116.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Protests that began on December 28, 2025, by shopkeepers at the Grand Bazaar in Tehran due to the local currency's significant loss of value against foreign currencies and economic problems in Iran have spread to many cities across the country.

While no official statement has been made regarding those who died or were injured in the demonstrations, HRANA stated in a report published on January 10 (the 14th day of the protests) that 116 people, including 37 security personnel and 4 healthcare workers, had lost their lives, over 2,600 people had been injured, and 2,638 people had been detained.
