Decision that angered the Serbs
Kosovo has announced that its request to purchase Javelin anti-tank missiles has been approved by the US.
Kosovo's Minister of Defense, Ejup Maqedonci, has confirmed that his country's request to purchase Javelin anti-tank missiles has been approved by the US.
Maqedonci made statements regarding the matter on a local television channel.
Confirming that Kosovo's request to purchase Javelin anti-tank missiles has been accepted, Maqedonci said, "It is known that this request will be sent by the US Department of State to Congress for approval, and we expect a positive response from Congress, especially considering that the US is the main supporter of the Kosovo Security Force (FSK) in its transition process (to an army) and the development of its defense capabilities."
Pointing out that the negotiation phase regarding the price of the Javelin missiles has not yet begun, Maqedonci emphasized that they will also discuss when Kosovo will be able to take delivery of the anti-tank weapons in question.
When asked how many Javelin missiles would be purchased, Maqedonci replied, "Enough to meet the needs of the FSK."
'WE ALSO HAVE COOPERATION WITH TURKEY'
Stating that Kosovo plans to purchase anti-aircraft systems in the near future, Maqedonci said, "We are focusing on the countries with which we have the closest partnership, led by the US, which is our main supporter in developing our capabilities. We also have cooperation with NATO countries such as Turkey, Germany, the UK, Italy, and Croatia."
Maqedonci added that as a ministry, they have procured military equipment worth 239 million euros over the last 3 years.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, during his meeting with US Ambassador to Belgrade Christopher Hill, had stated that they received the US decision to approve the sale of Javelin anti-tank missiles to Kosovo with disappointment.
