Denial of 'walking away from the table' claims in Iran-US talks in Switzerland
Claims that the Iranian delegation abandoned the talks held in Switzerland following statements by US President Trump have been denied by diplomatic sources.
The first technical negotiations for the memorandum of understanding planned to be implemented between the US and Iran began today in the town of Bürgenstock in the Swiss canton of Nidwalden, with the mediation of Pakistan and Qatar. At the beginning of the process, reports emerged suggesting that Iran had walked away from the table.
In response to these claims, which appeared on social media and were attributed to the Fars News Agency, a diplomat involved in the talks made a statement. Speaking to Axios reporter Barak Ravid, the diplomat stated that the Iranian delegation had not left the talks and that negotiations with the US were ongoing, saying, "The Iranians have not left, and their talks with the US are continuing."
This development drew attention as the claims increased, particularly following harsh statements directed at Iran by former US President Donald Trump. In his statements, Trump emphasized that harsh sanctions would be imposed on Iran and that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian should be careful with his words. Trump stated, "Iran must immediately stop its highly paid proxy forces in Lebanon from causing trouble. Otherwise, we will strike Iran again very hard, just as we did last week, and even harder this time. (Iranian President Masoud) Pezeshkian had better watch what he says, or we will take over the rest of the country too."
On the other hand, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Speaker of the Iranian Parliament and head of the negotiation delegation, evaluated Trump's remarks. Ghalibaf stated, "We do not take the Americans' threats seriously," emphasizing that they had not walked away from the table despite security concerns.
It was reported that the talks are being held to determine the technical details regarding the implementation of the memorandum signed between Iran and the US, and that the process is continuing with the mediation role of Pakistan and Qatar.
